One of the common issues I see with homeowners who suspect rodent activity is a garage with too much clutter. Rodents like to harbor in clutter and if you have too much stuff stored in your garage you have created a perfect safe haven for rodents. The presence of pests can also be hard to detect in these types of environments.
Clean up and the rodents will clear out.
When clearing the clutter, keep these tips in mind:
- Ask yourself if you have used each item in the past year, if not, what’s the likelihood you ever will again? If the answer is not likely, donate, recycle or trash the item.
- If you will use it again or want to keep something for sentimental reasons, don’t store it in cardboard. Mice love cardboard. It makes great nesting material for them.
- Get things off the floor and away from the walls. Invest in some garage shelving or overhead storage.
- Pet food should be kept in airtight containers. Be sure to clean up any spills right away. Feed your dog or cat only the amount of food it will eat at a time to avoid any rodent-tempting-food lying about.
- Any garbage cans should have tight-fitting covers eliminating access to pests.
